Riding with Faith: Sikh Riders Seek Religious Exemption from Motorcycle Helmet Laws in Australia
In this episode of the Haanji Melbourne, Radio Haanji presenter Preetinder Singh Grewal speaks with Bhupinder Singh from the Sovereign Sikh Riders, who are leading the call for a helmet exemption for Turban-wearing Sikh motorcyclists in Australia. Mr Singh explains that this is not merely a matter of choice or convenience — it’s a question of religious freedom. For practicing Sikhs, the turban (Dastaar) is a sacred article of faith that must be worn at all times, and being forced to remove it to wear a helmet directly violates their religious obligations.
The Sovereign Sikh Riders are advocating for legislative change in New South Wales, building on existing bicycle helmet exemptions in states like Queensland and Victoria and citing international precedents in countries like Canada and the UK, where motorcycle helmet exemptions have been granted without compromising public safety. The group recently presented their case to the NSW Parliament's Joint Standing Committee on Road Safety (Staysafe), reinforcing that their campaign is grounded in respectful dialogue, education, and the values of multicultural Australia.
Currently, the NSW Road Rules mandate helmet use for all bicyclists and motorcyclists with no exemptions. In response to concerns raised by the Sikh community, the NSW Parliament’s Joint Standing Committee on Road Safety (Staysafe) launched an inquiry into the possibility of religious exemptions. The committee reviewed the risks and benefits of such exemptions and exploring how to ensure safe participation in transport for Sikh Australians while respecting their religious obligations.
Mr Singh highlights that similar exemptions already exist in countries like Canada and the UK, and even for bicycle riders in parts of Australia. The Sovereign Sikh Riders continue their advocacy — urging lawmakers to uphold Australia's commitment to multiculturalism and religious freedom.
