ਆਸਟ੍ਰੇਲੀਆ ਵਿੱਚ 16 ਸਾਲ ਤੋਂ ਘੱਟ ਉਮਰ ਵਾਲੇ ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਸਬੰਧੀ ਨਵੇਂ ਸੋਸ਼ਲ ਮੀਡੀਆ ਕਾਨੂੰਨ ਲਾਗੂ ਹੋ ਗਏ ਹਨ ਜਿਸ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਮਾਹਿਰਾਂ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ਼-ਨਾਲ਼ ਮਾਪਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਸੋਸ਼ਲ ਮੀਡੀਆ ਦੀ 'ਗੁਲਾਮੀ' ਛੱਡਣ ਦੀ ਸਲਾਹ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਜਾ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ। 
ਸਰਕਾਰ ਨੇ ਫੈਸਲਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ ਕਿ 16 ਸਾਲ ਤੋਂ ਘੱਟ ਉਮਰ ਵਾਲੇ ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਹੁਣ ਵੱਡੀਆਂ ਸੋਸ਼ਲ ਮੀਡੀਆ ਐਪਾਂ ’ਤੇ ਖਾਤੇ ਬਣਾਉਣ ਦੀ ਇਜਾਜ਼ਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਵੇਗੀ। 
Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Snapchat ਅਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਮੁੱਖ ਪਲੇਟਫਾਰਮਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕਾਨੂੰਨੀ ਤੌਰ ’ਤੇ ਇਹ ਯਕੀਨੀ ਬਣਾਉਣਾ ਪਵੇਗਾ ਕਿ ਬੱਚੇ ਖਾਤੇ ਨਾ ਬਣਾਉਣ — ਨਹੀਂ ਤਾਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ’ਤੇ 50 ਮਿਲੀਅਨ ਡਾਲਰ ਤੱਕ ਜੁਰਮਾਨਾ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਇਸਦੇ ਨਾਲ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਖਾਤੇ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਵੀ ਬੰਦ ਕੀਤੇ ਜਾਣਗੇ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਸਬੰਧਿਤ ਪਲੇਟਫਾਰਮ ਉਮਰ ਦੀ ਜਾਂਚ ਲਈ ID ਜਾਂ AI ਅਧਾਰਿਤ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਵਰਤਣਗੇ।
ਮਹੱਤਵਪੂਰਨ ਗੱਲ ਇਹ ਵੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੋਸ਼ਲ ਮੀਡੀਆ ਐਪਾਂ ਵੇਖਣ ਤੋਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਰੋਕਿਆ ਗਿਆ — ਉਹ ਬਿਨਾਂ 'ਲਾਗਿਨ' ਕੀਤੇ ਜਨਤਕ ਸਮੱਗਰੀ ਫਿਰ ਵੀ ਦੇਖ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਸਰਕਾਰ ਦਾ ਕਹਿਣਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਕਦਮ ਨੌਜਵਾਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ 'ਡੂਮਸਕ੍ਰੋਲਿੰਗ', 'ਆਨਲਾਈਨ ਲਤ' ਅਤੇ 'ਸਾਇਬਰਬੁਲੀਅੰਗ' ਤੋਂ ਬਚਾਉਣ ਲਈ  ਸਹਾਈ ਸਾਬਿਤ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ, ਹਾਲਾਂਕਿ ਮਾਹਿਰ ਚੇਤਾਵਨੀ ਦੇ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਹਰ ਪਲੇਟਫਾਰਮ ਦੇ ਉਮਰ-ਜਾਂਚ ਦੇ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਵੱਖ ਹਨ, ਇਸ ਕਰਕੇ ਨਿਯਮ ਪੂਰੀ ਤਰਾਂਹ ਲਾਗੂ ਕਰਨੇ ਮੁਸ਼ਕਿਲ ਹੋਣਗੇ।
